Launching Into the New Year

By: Alexis Hassan, LMFT-A

Recently, it feels like life won’t stop- delivering one blow after another. Whether it’s personal drama or another breaking story on the news, 2025 was relentless and 2026 seems to have hit the ground running. Weathering the impact of all of these changes can be exhausting. As we face the new year, it is important that we prioritize our wellbeing, making sure we are equipped to handle whatever 2026 might have in store.

As I have mentioned previously, one of the most important things we can do to care for ourselves is invest in our community. When you receive news- whether it is bad or good- who do you call first? Who do you want to support you when you are feeling blue? Surrounding yourself with people who fill your cup is important because having a community means you never have to face life’s challenges alone. However, an important part of being in community is also supporting those who support you. As you navigate the year, how will you make sure that your battery is charged enough to give back to those you love?

There is no one size fits all approach to building your coping skills. What works for others in your life might not work for you. However, your body and mind always picks up on what it needs. As you go through your day, be mindful about what you are feeling at that moment. What activities are recharging your battery? What activities are draining? It is important to build a daily routine with an appropriate ratio of recharging activities so you can avoid having a dead battery or burning out. We also have to be flexible with ourselves, during harder times, we will need to invest in ourselves more, ensuring that we continue to charge our batteries.

Even with a self-care routine, established coping skills, and a community, it can still feel impossible to keep going and that is okay. The important thing is to know when to ask for help. Here at Acquiring Hope, we are here to support you no matter what is going on in your life. As the New Year creates new joys and new trials, we are here to help you navigate them one step at a time.
